If you only do 6 months, and leave the boat, you'll lose your deposits on boat, trailer and tow vehicle and your tow vehicle will be banned from Mexico for life. This happened to us once. Our truck is totally bummed it can't come back to Mexico. Have fun! Last edited by a moderator: Jun 16, 2019.
Consider; Hobie, Laser (good Laser Masters fleets), kite, wing, inflatable, foiling, folding, camping, solar power, BBQ, waterproof Bluetooth stuff, Ice scraper, wine fridge, and a paddle. As I leave the pointy end, I'm counting on you, the SA community that's been there time and again when I woke up in a strange place and couldn't find my car ...
The T-35 is too small to hoist a dinghy unless the dinghy were very very small and light, and then it should be easy to lift it aboard and stow. Secondly, they will be in the way of sailing and especially in the way docking. Thirdly, they will be ugly as shit and this is a pretty boat.
Build your fore and aft supports at the height you want, hang your boat from the crane and measure the change in height where the midship supports are going to be. Cut the midship supports to the correct length (shorter) and mount all supports to the trailer. Bolt or screw the boards down from midship to the ends, wrap in carpet and walk away.
Boat & Trailer probably weigh 1200 lbs plus the gear. Had no extra trailer brakes. Finally decided to upgrade as stopping required prior planning. Don't think you really need a tranny cooler, but trailer brakes are an excellent idea. Now I use a 2003 Expedition with 4.6 liter V-8 and serious brakes.
First time I've ever dry sailed a keel boat, and I really don't like the fact that I can't just run down to the club and take a quick single-handed sail. I need at least 2 others to help me get the boat off and back on the trailer, and it's a pain. I even looked into a Hydro-Hoist (bunks on inflatable pontoons).
I'd recommend an inflatable kayak or SUP. Maybe consider short and fat for your length challenged boat. I have a 9' Hobie inflatable that I love. IMHO SUP/Hobie 9' is easier than a kayak (inflatable or not) (They're more compact). Deflate it a little and fold it over in two or in thirds to stuff in the boat somewhere.
Brooklyn NYC. Mar 8, 2006. #19. I am planning to make one for a J24 trailer using a fiberglass pile jacket. Pretty much a long fiberglass tube either with or without a seam running down the length. Probably more expensive than PVC, but is more durable, won't deform in the heat, and easier to patch up holes.
4. There is a great VXone fleet at Edgewater, which is a quasi dinghy, but membership and boat price is tough. I borrowed a VX and sailed it a lot last year- great boat. The most active local dinghy fleets for weekend racing are Thistles and Interlakes. Lots of Thistles around, but no active weeknight racing.
4. SF Bay Area. Aug 15, 2013. #23. Fixed Keel boat was sold. New owner sold or donated it to one of the AC Campaigns where it was heavily modified and sailed down in San Diego. They added a 5 foot scoop on the stern, hiking racks, swing keel, etc. It is my understanding that years later, the driver was killed falling into SF Bay during a race.
