The league was formed in 2014 following the merger of the Midland Alliance and Midland Combination.. Founded in 1889, only one year after the Football League, the Midland League was the second league for professional clubs to be formed. Eleven clubs participated in the first season, 1889–90, four of whom (including the first champions, Lincoln City) would go on to achieve Football League status. The eleven founder members came from six counties.
They moved to the Yorkshire League in 1926 and switched to the Midland League the following year, being crowned as Midlands League champions in 1929–30. In 1946–47 they won the Rugeley & District League. After winning the league again the following season, they moved on to the Cannock Chase League. The club were champions of the new league in 1954–55, before going on to win the title again in 1954–55, 1956–57, 1957–58, 1960–61, 1973–74 and 1977–78. [1]
The league changed its name to the Midland Combination in 1968 to reflect the drawing of clubs from a wider area. In the 2007–08 season, the league's representative team, drawn from clubs in Division One, reached the final of the FA National League System Cup .
