"Down by the Riverside" (also known as "Ain't Gonna Study War No More" and "Gonna lay down my burden") is an African-American spiritual.Its roots date back to before the American Civil War, [1] though it was first published in 1918 in Plantation Melodies: A Collection of Modern, Popular and Old-time Negro-Songs of the Southland, Chicago, the Rodeheaver Company. When it was first published in 1938, Uncle Tom's Children included only four novellas: "Big Boy Leaves Home," "Down by the Riverside," "Long Black Song," and "Fire and Cloud." "The Ethics of Living Jim Crow" and "Bright and Morning Star," which are now the first and final pieces, respectively, were added when the book was republished in 1940. [ 1 ]
"Down by the River" is a song composed by Neil Young. It was first released on his 1969 album with Crazy Horse, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere.Young explained the context of the story in the liner notes of his 1977 anthology album Decade, stating that he wrote "Down by the River," "Cinnamon Girl" and "Cowgirl in the Sand" while delirious in bed in Topanga Canyon with a 103 °F (39 °C) fever.

The song is told as a first-person narrative by Hammond. The storyline is that he and his lover take a camping trip down by a river, where they both decide to go swimming. The next day, both feel ill, having not slept well all night, and go for a morning walk. During their walk, they see "silver fish lay on its side" and wonder how it died.
The actual origin of "Down by the Bay" is uncertain as it shares the melody with other songs. One of these is a Greek folk song called "Γιαλό, γιαλό" ("γιαλό" meaning "bay" or "seaside") exists with this same melody. [1] It is an Ionian Cantada, a style of folk music that originated in the late 19th century. [1]

Later, at the Down by the Riverside Club, Del and Rodney meet Trigger's friend, "Singing Dustman" Tony Angelino, who has modelled himself on a young Tom Jones and singing – fairly well – to various old women who cheer for him.
