For my concept, the character is more Swashbuckler focused than Warlock focused, so I at lvl 8 I am Swashbuckler 5/Hexblade 3. I went with a variant Tiefling, Devil's Tongue, for flavorful spells: Vicious Mockery, Charm Person, Enthrall are all great on a dashing Swashbuckler type. Stats for this character I focused on Dex, Con, Cha in that order.
The swashbuckler still doesn't add modifiers to the bonus action attack. If you look at the description where it mentions two weapon fighting, it says " and can fight with two weapons while safely darting away from an opponent."
As a swashbuckler you will get booming blade reliably, as a swashbuckler will move away without AoO after the attack. So if he wants you he has to move . imo Brace and Trip are the best battle master options to use with this combo. Goading attacking can be great as your other fighters will do better and also get AoO if the enemy tries to come ...
Combat Maneuvers will feel far flashier than your Swashbuckler flourishes, and start off as Short Rest resources right from day 1, so being "a swashbuckler" by pushing Fighter 3 makes a lot of sense. Pick up Defense Fighting Style along the way (Swashbuckler will give you Duelist), and enjoy Action Surge as well for some real cinematic turn ...

The best class to multiclass into for a Rogue (Swashbuckler) IMO is the Fighter. I recommend at least 5 levels for Extra Attack, which if you are two-weapon fighting as per the intent of the subclass, that gives you three attacks per round to land Sneak Attack.

You may very well be able to buy just the Swashbuckler class by itself for a couple of $, instead of a while book! Rollback Post to Revision RollBack #5 Nov 9, 2020
Rogue and ranger are close enough to each other that I dont see any thematic problems with multiclassing them. After all classes are just rules to keep characters somewhat balanced, and 5e does a great job with it. I would not worry about powerlevel in this case as a gm.
