Sentiment was against "flipper" DVD's and for lots of extras. The studios wanted half-rate DTS as a calling card, as if our discs have it all. I have quite a few of those early DTS, in-house produced high-bit DVD's, and about 15 of the LD's too, for that matter. Oh, and about 20 D-VHS tapes with high-rate also.
A few years ago with a friend I did a direct comparison of the 5.1 mixes between the Rumours DVD-A and the SACD. We could not tell any differences between the two. The SACD audio output of the Oppo was set to PCM so we were not comparing PCM and DSD but just PCM.
For general comparison with the Totem Bison speaker that can also be readily auditioned, there is no real audible cross-pollination to/from the Sky, Loon, or Kin. That's because the Bison design most likely started (at least on paper) as a variation of the Totem Signature One.
Although, I admit, that those two very distinct technologies and designs make the comparison interesting. The source is the same: Audiolab 9000CDT and Denafrips Pontus II dac connected with Atlas Compass rca-rca digital cable and Belden 8402 interconnect.
I believe playing a DTS-CD (or any CD) through a DVD or Blu-ray player connected via HDMI is the same as having it connected via optical or coax digital connections. The only difference between HDMI and traditional digital connections is the HDMI can carry lossless signals and video where as traditional digital connections can carry lossy audio ...
Can't do you a comparison but I do have the 7000CDT and I'm not enjoying the experience. I started with the 6000CDT but I had to swap that due to an annoying usability flaw. I'm already on my second 7000CDT as the CD reading mech failed after 4 months on the first.
Having multiple DACs on a single chip provides the designer with more flexibility. A chip with 8 DACs could be a single chip solution in a 7.1 M-ch system, or conversely used for stereo with four DACs per channel, or in mono mode with 8 DACs per channel. The choice can depend on projected cost, performance targets, etc.
I have a chance to get a 'very good' quality DCC gold CD of this title for ~$35. I'm curious if this is still considered the best version, or if I...
A comparison of two turntables of which one is broken is a bit pointless… And even then, when you have both in good condition, use the same settings, cartridge, mat, phono cables, phono preamp, records and equal loudness. Otherwise it’s still not a reliable comparison.
Then I'll be able to directly compare the sound of the Raphaelite to a popular transformer that many know and love (the Lundahl LL1933 transformers cost me about $330 / pair and are more now, and an assembled basic SUT from K&K using the more expensive LL1931 amorphous core version is around $650).
