The infraclass Metatheria includes all living and extinct marsupials, but also includes some related extinct orders of mammals that are no longer considered marsupials, such as Sparassodonta. At least six families of sparassodonts lived in South America prior to the interchange, dominating the niches for large mammalian carnivores.
It inhabits forests of Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador and Honduras. [ 4 ] [ 2 ] It is a social animal, living in groups of 20–42 members. [ 5 ] The subspecies is considered to be an endangered according to the IUCN Red List since 2020, mostly due to human threats.
They generally inhabit the forest floor or humid areas associated with tropical forests. They are nocturnal animals or are active intermittently during the day. They feed mainly on insects and other invertebrates. All species are oviparous. The family is made up of more than 220 species grouped into 40 genera. A species occurs in El Salvador.
