Ash finally defeats Paul, and moves ahead, onto the semi-finals and enters in the Top 4 of the Sinnoh League. Paul tells Ash that he is going to see Pyramid King Brandon and ask for a rematch, and they both agree to eventually battle again one day, with the hatred between them turning to friendship, as well as acknowledging Infernape's growth.
When Paul discovers that Ash has beaten the Pyramid King Brandon and his brother Reggie couldn't beat him, he decides to take on Brandon in a Full Battle. However, Paul's emotions and anger get the better of him as his Pokémon prove no match against the three Regis. Afterwards, Reggie suggests that Ash and Paul have a full battle in ten days.
Ash starts off the battle by sending out Lucario first, while Paul sends out his Gyarados. Gyarados initially gets the upper hand on Lucario, but it gets taken out by Lucario's newly learned Bullet Punch. The next match up is between Ash's Dragonite and Paul's Garchomp, with Dragonite eventually being knocked out.
