The journal of a male student at Amherst College in 1894 recounts an invitation and trip to an early prom at neighboring Smith College for women. The word prom at that time may have been a fancy description for an ordinary junior or senior class dance, but prom soon took on larger-than-life meaning for high school students. [9]
The club was founded by abolitionist, suffragist, mother, and Los Angeles homemaker Caroline Severance in 1891, with 87 other women in the reading room of the Hollenbeck Hotel, then located at Second and Broadway. [2] The Friday Morning Club became the largest women's club in California, with membership of over 1,800 women by the 1920s. [3] [4] [5]
In 1924, the Club opened its present location at 545 S. Figueroa Street, one block west of the Los Angeles Public Library. [ 13 ] Since 1927, the club has had a beach location in Santa Monica, in a building designed by architect Gene Verge, Sr. [ 14 ]
