Williams was born in Des Moines, Iowa, on November 21, 1914. [1] [2] She had six siblings. [1]Williams graduated from North High School as a valedictorian. [3] She later received a degree from Cortez Peters Business College in Chicago, a Bachelor of Science degree from Drake University, and a master's degree in social work from the University of Iowa. The university was the original developer of the Master of Fine Arts degree and it operates the Iowa Writers' Workshop, whose alumni include 17 of the university's 46 Pulitzer Prize winners.
