The list of compositions of Ludwig van Beethoven consists of 722 works [1] written over forty-five years, from his earliest work in 1782 (variations for piano on a march by Ernst Christoph Dressler) when he was only eleven years old and still in Bonn, until his last work just before his death in Vienna in 1827.
This work is an attempt to chronologically order all of Beethoven's creative output, in a manner similar to the catalogues of Franz Schubert's works by Otto Erich Deutsch and of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's works by Ludwig Ritter von Köchel. Beethoven's works can appear with an opus number, a WoO number, a Hess number or a Bia number (see Catalogues of Beethoven compositions). Until 1955, the opus numbers that appeared in the Beethoven Gesamtausgabe were used exclusively, but this edition omitted a large number of works.
