From his first album Undertones in 2003, Smith self-produced nine albums through independent labels. In 2015 he released his tenth album, While the Getting' Is Good , produced by Keith Stegall on Sugar Hill Records [ 4 ] [ 5 ]
Long Line of Heartaches was recorded at RCA Victor Records's Studio B, where Smith cut many of her major hit singles for RCA in the 1960s and 70s. The release includes five new songs Smith co-wrote with husband and producer Marty Stuart, and seven written by other country songwriters, including Harlan Howard, Kostas, and Johnny Russell.
A non-album funk-style single, "I'm Not Gonna Cry", was released in April 2007, and the album was released in October along with two B-sides/bonus tracks: "Settlin' In" and "The Collection Song".
