The Valvetronic system is a BMW variable valve lift system [1] which, in combination with VANOS, allows infinite adjustment of the intake valve timing and lift. [2] [3] The system claims to improve fuel economy and emissions, and negates the need for a throttle body in regular use. [4]
The BMW N52 is a naturally aspirated straight-6 petrol engine which was produced from 2004 to 2015. The N52 replaced the BMW M54 and debuted on the E90 3 Series and E63 6 Series . The N52 was the first water-cooled engine to use magnesium/aluminium composite construction in the engine block. [ 1 ]
The first-generation single VANOS system adjusts the timing of the intake camshaft to one of two positions — e.g. the camshaft is advanced at certain engine speeds. [2] [3] VANOS was first introduced in 1992 on the BMW M50 engine used in 3 and 5 Series. In 1998 single infinitely variable VANOS was introduced on the BMW M62 V8 engine. [2]
A successor to the BMW M60, the M62 features an aluminium engine block [2] and a single row timing chain. [3] In 1998, a Technical Update included VANOS (variable valve timing) for the intake camshafts. The S62 engine is the BMW M high performance version of the M62, which was released in the E39 M5, BMW Z8, Ascari KZ1, and the Ascari A10.
The BMW M54 is a naturally aspirated straight-6 DOHC petrol engine produced from 2000 to 2006. It was released in the E53 X5 [1] and is the replacement for the M52 engine. The S54 is the equivalent high performance engine, used in the E46 M3, the Z3 M Coupé/Roadster and the E85/E86 Z4 M.

The BMW M50 is a straight-6 DOHC petrol engine which was produced from 1990 to 1996. It was released in the E34 520i and 525i, to replace the M20 engine. [1] In September 1992, the M50 was upgraded to the M50TÜ (Technische Überarbeitung, "technical revision"). This was BMW's first engine to use variable valve timing. [2]
