The Hunger Games follows 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen, a girl from District 12 who volunteers for the 74th Hunger Games in place of her younger sister Primrose Everdeen. Also selected from District 12 is Peeta Mellark , who once saved Katniss from starvation when they were children.
Katniss states that Prim is "the only person I'm certain I love". At the Reaping for the 74th Hunger Games, Prim is chosen by lottery as the female "representative" of District 12. Katniss volunteers to and takes her place. Before Katniss leaves for the Capitol, Prim makes her promise to try hard to win, and Katniss agrees.
The 75th Hunger Games, also known as the third Quarter Quell, is announced with a twist: tributes are to be selected from the existing pool of victors. As the only living female victor from District 12, Katniss is forced to compete, and at the Reaping, Effie draws Haymitch’s name, but Peeta immediately volunteers in his place.
