In the list below, the rivers are grouped by the seas or oceans into which they flow. Rivers that flow into other rivers are ordered by the proximity of their point of confluence to the mouth of the main river, i.e., the lower in the list, the more upstream. There is an alphabetical list of rivers at the end of this article.
This is a list of cities and towns in Russia. According to the data of 2010 Russian Census , there are 1,117 cities and towns in Russia. After the Census, Innopolis , a town in the Republic of Tatarstan , was established in 2012 and granted town status in 2015.
The city of Zelenograd (a part of the federal city of Moscow) and the municipal cities/towns of the federal city of St. Petersburg are also excluded, as they are not enumerated in the 2021 census as stand-alone localities. Note that the sixteen largest cities have a total population of 35,509,177, or roughly 24.1% of the country's total population.

The river flows in Russia through forests, forest steppes and steppes. Five of the ten largest cities of Russia , including the nation's capital, Moscow , are located in the Volga's drainage basin. Because the Volga drains into the Caspian Sea , which is an endorheic body of water, the Volga does not naturally connect to any of the world's oceans.
