Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok is a five-star hotel in Bangkok owned in part and managed by Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group. Located on the Chao Phraya River, the original structure was the first hotel built in Thailand when it opened as The Oriental in 1876. Today, the hotel is one of two flagship properties of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group.
Although 1876 was the ‘official’ opening year of the Oriental Hotel, the origin of the ‘Oriental’ side of the Mandarin Oriental can be traced back as early as 1863, when two Americans, Captain Atkins Dyer, and William West, opened the Oriental Hotel in Bangkok, Siam (now Thailand): however, the original building burnt down only two years later, on 11 June 1865.
The hotel went through a US$17 million renovation in 2001–2002, including its guest rooms, lobby, restaurant, entrance, and spa [7] as part of a wider US$130 million investment in the region, that included the Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur, the Makati Shangri-La, Manila, the China World Hotel, Beijing and the Kowloon Shangri-La, Hong Kong.
It was developed by the Hong Kong-based real estate developer, HKR International with the help of Indonesian-hotelier, Adrian Zecha. [ 4 ] [ 5 ] The hotel was designed in a style inspired by the ancient Sukhothai Kingdom by the late Australian-architect, Kerry Hill alongside his American counterpart, Ed Tuttle .
