Doña Ana Peak is located in the southeastern part of the range, where it is prominent viewed from Las Cruces, and Summerford Mountain is prominent in the northeast corner of the range. The range is heavily eroded and largely barren of vegetation, exposing some 130 square kilometers (50 sq mi) of bedrock.
The San Augustin Mountains are only about an 8 miles (13 km) long range, trending slightly northeast. The southern border is San Augustin Pass, where U.S. Route 70 goes from Las Cruces and Organ and turns northeast through White Sands to meet Alamogordo.

Aden Crater is a small shield volcano located in Doña Ana County, about 25 miles (40 km) southwest of Las Cruces, New Mexico. [3] It is located in the northwest part of the Aden-Afton basalt field, which is part of the central area of the Potrillo volcanic field.
