The Lindisfarne Gospels (London, British Library Cotton MS Nero D.IV) is an illuminated manuscript gospel book probably produced around the years 715–720 in the monastery at Lindisfarne, off the coast of Northumberland, which is now in the British Library in London. This manuscript is the oldest surviving illustrated Latin (rather than Greek or Syriac) Gospel Book, [2] and one of the oldest European books in existence. Although the only surviving illuminations are two full-page miniatures , these are of great significance in art history as so few comparable images have survived.
