Visual Studio 2005 Express, the first version of the Express edition, was released in October 2005. It runs on Windows 2000 SP4 and later. The first service pack for 2005 Express was released in December 2006. This version is freeware and requires no registration. Visual Studio 2008 Express reached general availability in November 2007.
Prior to this date, the only free editions of Visual Studio were the feature-limited Express variants. Unlike the Express variants, Visual Studio Community supports multiple languages, and provides support for extensions. Individual developers have no restrictions on their use of the Community edition.
Support for Visual Studio 6.0 - 2003 was deprecated in 2017, though the latest version to support those older IDEs is still available for download. (Visual Studio Express editions lack third-party extensibility and Visual Studio Code uses a separate extensibility model, thus Visual Assist cannot be used with them.)
