The lymphatic system drains the head and neck of excess interstitial fluid via lymph vessels or capillaries, equally into the right lymphatic duct and the thoracic duct. Lymph nodes line the cervical spine and neck regions as well as along the face and jaw. The tonsils also are lymphatic tissue and help mediate the ingestion of pathogens.
It descends on the posterior aspect of the neck, and divides into a superficial and deep portion. The superficial portion supplies the trapezius muscle and anastomoses with the ascending branch of the transverse cervical. The deep portion anastomoses with the vertebral artery and with the a. profunda cervicalis, a branch of the costocervical trunk.
At the lower part of the neck, the common carotid artery is very deeply seated, being covered by the integument, superficial fascia, the platysma muscle, deep cervical fascia, the sternocleidomastoid muscle, the sternohyoid, sternothyroid, and the omohyoid; in the upper part of its course it is more superficial, being covered merely by the ...
The brachiocephalic artery, brachiocephalic trunk, or innominate artery is an artery of the mediastinum that supplies blood to the right arm, head, and neck. It is a large-diameter (24 mm) short length vein that receives venous return from the upper half of the body, above the diaphragm .
Diagram showing parts of the body that drain into the right lymphatic duct. The right duct drains lymph fluid from: the upper right section of the trunk, (right thoracic cavity, via the right bronchomediastinal trunk) [1] the right arm (via the right subclavian trunk) [1] and right side of the head and neck (via the right jugular trunk) [1]
