The Bruce Codex, when it was purchased by Bruce, consisted of 78 loose unordered papyrus leaves. Each leaf was inscribed on both sides for 156 pages total. By the time the Bodleian acquired the Codex, 7 of the original leaves had gone missing, however. Knowledge of them is kept by the copies Woide made when all of the leaves were still there.
Between Woide's transcription of the codex and the 1970s, seven leaves disappeared altogether, and there is significant damage throughout the manuscripts. [10] Among the texts in the Bruce Codex were the Untitled Text and the Books of Jeu. The manuscript in the Bruce Codex is a Coptic [11] translation of an older Greek original. [4]

It was at one point supposedly restricted for the use of Roman or Byzantine emperors, although in a letter of Saint Jerome of 384, he "writes scornfully of the wealthy Christian women whose books are ...
Bruce Codex contains the first and second Books of Jeu and three fragments – an untitled text, an untitled hymn, and the text "On the Passage of the Soul Through the Archons of the Midst". Codex Tchacos , 4th century, contains the Gospel of Judas , the First Apocalypse of James , the Letter of Peter to Philip , and a fragment of Allogenes .
The Codex Gigas opened to the page with the distinctive portrait of the Devil from which the text received its byname, the Devil's Bible. [1]The Codex Gigas ("Giant Book"; Czech: Obří kniha) is the largest extant medieval illuminated manuscript in the world, at a length of 92 cm (36 in). [2]
