The 4th Infantry Division is a division of the United States Army based at Fort Carson, Colorado.It is composed of a division headquarters battalion, three brigade combat teams (two Stryker and one armor), a combat aviation brigade, a division sustainment brigade, and a division artillery.
The brigade deployed to Baghdad from 2006–2007. After returning to Fort Hood, the brigade was reflagged as 4th BCT, 1st Cavalry Division. Simultaneously, the 2nd BCT, 2nd Infantry Division at Fort Carson, CO, was reflagged as the 4th BCT, 4th Infantry Division.
Activated 12 July 1948 at Fort Dix, New Jersey. Inactivated 1 December 1957 at Fort Carson, Colorado, and relieved from assignment to the 9th Infantry Division. Reorganized and redesignated 31 July 1959 as the 84th Artillery, a parent regiment under the Combat Arms Regimental System. * Redesignated 1 September 1971 as the 84th Field Artillery.

The Piñon Canyon Maneuver Site (PCMS) is a training site for Fort Carson. In 2003, the U.S. Army announced a plan to expand PCMS by purchasing additional land mostly owned by individuals devoted to ranching. Local residents and conservation organizations opposed the expansion. In 2013 the Army cancelled the planned expansion.
In January 2010, 4–42 FA deployed in similar weather conditions to provide indirect fires in support of Alpha Company, 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger training on Fort Carson ranges. The battalion's deployment mission was finalized and the Straight Arrows transitioned the entire formation to a motorized infantry battalion.
