The church as it appeared in 1914. In 1886 the territory extending from 34th to 44th Streets, west of 10th Avenue, was separated by the Archdiocese of New York from St. Michael's and Holy Cross parishes and formed into the new parish of St. Raphael, which was incorporated May 4 of that year.
The pope named Auxiliary Bishop Charles Helmsing of St. Louis as the first bishop of the new diocese. [10] In 1962, Helmsing became bishop of the Diocese of Kansas City-Saint Joseph. These three schools merged in 1932, moving operations over to the high school located at St. Raphael's Church in downtown Springfield. However, as the site began to become too crowded, the need for a larger campus became evident, and the school eventually moved again to a new building built down the street from the St. Raphael campus.
