As of the 2020 census, the population was 25,768, making it the 8th most populous county in South Dakota. [1] Its county seat is Deadwood. [2] Lawrence County is coextensive with the Spearfish, SD Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Rapid City-Spearfish, SD Combined Statistical Area.
The terrain generally slopes to the east and south; its highest point is near its NW corner, at 2,582 ft (787 m) ASL. [4] Corson County has a total area of 2,530 square miles (6,600 km 2), of which 2,470 square miles (6,400 km 2) is land and 60 square miles (160 km 2) (2.4%) is water. [5] It is the fifth-largest county in South Dakota by area.
