Shisui (酒々井町, Shisui-machi) is a town located in Chiba Prefecture, Japan. [1] As of 1 December 2020, the town had an estimated population of 20,660 in 9,888 households and a population density of 1,100 persons per km 2. [2] The total area of the town is 19.02 square kilometres (7.34 sq mi).
The site was discovered during construction on an expansion to the Shisui Parking Area on the Higashi-Kantō Expressway, and was excavated from 1999 to 2000. The ruins consist of a ring-shape block of stones, indicating the location of a substantial settlement covering an area of 70 meters north-to-south by 60 meters east-to-west.
Shisui Station was opened on January 19, 1897 as a station on the Narita Railway Company for both freight and passenger operations. The Narita Railway was nationalized on September 1, 1920, becoming part of the Japanese Government Railway (JGR). After World War II, the JGR became the Japan National Railways (JNR). The Seikan Tunnel (Japanese: 青函トンネル, Seikan Tonneru or 青函隧道, Seikan Zuidō) is a 53.85 km (33.46 mi) dual-gauge railway tunnel in Japan, with a 23.3 km (14.5 mi) portion under the seabed of the Tsugaru Strait, which separates Aomori Prefecture on the main Japanese island of Honshu from the northern island of Hokkaido.
