A brief description of how the ATAR works [1]. The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) for all domestic students, or the ATAR-based Combined Rank (CR) for all International Baccalaureate (IB) students, [2] are the primary criteria for determining the Selection Rank (SR) for admission into undergraduate courses in Australian public universities. [3]
This percentile ranking is the ATAR. [ 4 ] [ 5 ] In practice, this means that if two students receive the same HSC marks for each subject, but one student takes more higher-scaling subjects, and the other takes more lower-scaling subjects, the student who took higher-scaling subjects would attain a better ATAR. Selection Rank (SR): a rank assigned by the university for granting admission. Domestic students must apply to the Tertiary Admission Centre (TAC) of the relevant state which will calculate the ATAR and their selection rank is determined by the university based on the ATAR and some other additional criteria assigned by the university.
Further restrictions may apply in certain subject areas. Further requirements regarding study patterns apply if the student wishes to apply for a separate Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) based on their HSC performance. [10] If they do, their final ATAR mark is calculated using their best 2 units of English and 8 best other units.
The UAI attempted to rank students who did not progress to their senior years of High School, by estimating what they would have got. This keeps the rank consistent throughout the years despite fluctuating Year 10 drop-out rates as the rank was always measured relative to a Year 10 cohort, with the ranks of the drop-outs being estimated.

Only the Selection Rank that is used to determine higher education applications will be adjusted after applying for SEAS, while the ATAR will remain unchanged. Different institutions may also have different methods of SEAS adjustment due to differences in the calculation method, and the under-represented groups in each course are different.
