Karastan is an American brand of oriental rugs, made from 1928 to 2021 from worsted wool. In 1921, the retailer Marshall Field's established a textile mill in Eden, North Carolina , as part of its Homecrest Rug division.
Kerman carpets of the 18th century and later very often use "lattice" patterns, with the central field divided by a lattice design giving many small compartments. A notable example is a carpet having belonged to William Morris , now on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum . [ 1 ]
The Caucasian carpet weavers adopted Safavid field divisions and floral motifs, but changed their style according to their ancient traditions. Characteristic motifs include stylized Chinese dragons in the so-called “Dragon carpets”, combat scenes of tigers and stags, or floral motifs.

What they did not appreciate, however, was the color, so for much of the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, rugs exported from Iran were dyed to a desirable, deep, raspberry-red color, once they arrive in the USA.
