The 1990 Plainfield tornado was a devastating tornado that occurred on the afternoon of Tuesday, August 28, 1990. The violent tornado killed 29 people and injured 353. [1] It is the only F5/EF5 rated tornado ever officially recorded in August in the United States (unofficially the 1883 Rochester, Minnesota cyclone is considered an F5), and the only F5 tornado to strike the Chicago area.
Illinois has had large tornado outbreaks in the past, including the tornado outbreak sequence of December 18–20, 1957 and the 1967 Oak Lawn tornado outbreak. Illinois is vulnerable to tornadoes with an average of 35 occurring annually, which puts much of the state at around 5 tornadoes per 10,000 square miles (30,000 km 2) annually. [1]
1990 saw some unusual and powerful tornadoes and tornado outbreaks. On March 13 not one, but two F5 tornadoes struck Kansas, both coming from the same supercell.This was the only day since the 1974 Super Outbreak to have more than one F5 on the same day until the 2011 Super Outbreak, when four EF5 tornadoes touched down on April 27.
