The Time, later known as Morris Day and the Time and the Original 7ven, is an American funk rock band founded in Minneapolis in 1981. They contributed to the development of the Minneapolis sound , an eclectic fusion of funk , R&B , new wave , synth-pop and dance .
Although the individual members of the Time are credited with playing their instruments, the music was almost entirely performed by Prince. The only instrumental performances not by Prince were by Dr. Fink, who played synthesizer solos on "Get It Up" and "The Stick", and Morris Day, who played drums for the majority of the album.
This is the first Time song to be released featuring the Time as a band, rather than primarily Prince with Morris Day on vocals. Two more live versions have been released: one on Prince's Rave Un2 the Year 2000 DVD, and one recorded at the House of Blues in 1998 for Morris Day's 2004 album It's About Time .
What Time Is It? is a 1982 album by the Time.Their second album, it was recorded at Sunset Sound and Prince's home studio in the Minneapolis suburbs. The title of the album comes from an exclamation by Morris Day that became associated with the band's on-stage theatrics, appearing frequently on the band's debut album as well.
"777-9311" is the second track and lead single from The Time's second album, What Time Is It?. [2] Recorded for the album at Prince's home studio in May–June 1982, the song was produced, arranged, composed and performed by Prince with Morris Day later adding his lead vocals.
Note that the original label gave writing credits to Morris Day (or Morris Day and Jesse Johnson) for all six songs. However, the songs were officially registered with ASCAP as being written by Prince, or by Prince and Morris Day, which is from where the official writing credits have been sourced. [4]

The track was also one of the first Time tracks to involve other members of the band in the creation of the song. Morris Day and Jesse Johnson both contributed to writing the song. Day provided lead vocals and programmed the Linn LM-1 drum machine, and Johnson played guitar, while Prince played all the other instruments. [1] [2]
