The Postgraduate Institute of Agriculture (PGIA) of the University of Peradeniya is a graduate school that provides trained scientific personnel for the agricultural sector. It was established in 1975.

Agriculture(Special) four-year degree in Agriculture [3] On the recommendation of the committee on affiliated University colleges (1994), nine Affiliated University colleges spread out in various provinces of the country were merged to form two National Universities, the Rajarata and the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka in 1996.
The university has responded to the needs of the country and established two new faculties — 'Management and Finance' and 'Fisheries and Marine Science' — the first of its kind in Sri Lanka. Thus, the university has as many faculties as the University of Peradeniya, the largest in Sri Lanka. The main campus is at Matara.
Today, UWU caters to 2908 undergraduates through 13 programs offered by 4 faculties and has a staff of 337. The university now offers postgraduate courses, external degree programs, diploma courses, and open and distance learning programs, contributing to Sri Lanka's higher education landscape. The University of Sri Lanka was a public university in Sri Lanka. Established in 1972 by amalgamating the four existing universities, it was the only university in Sri Lanka from 1972 until 1978. The university was based at six campuses in Colombo, Peradeniya, Sri Jayewardenepura, Kelaniya, Moratuwa and Jaffna.
