Pinnacle Peak and its surrounding area became a part of the Arizona State Trust Land. In the 1980s, the area was annexed into Scottsdale and was established as a 185-acre (75 ha) park. In 1994, 35 acres (14 ha) were sold to a housing developer in exchange for the funding and construction of the park's main trail. [ 7 ]
The McDowells also comprise popular landmarks such as Pinnacle Peak and Tom's Thumb. Although technically a stand-alone, Mt. McDowell (referred to as Red Mountain by Phoenix residents), not to be confused with McDowell Peak, is sometimes listed on maps as a part of the McDowell Mountains.
The approximately 160-acre Adobe Mountain Desert Railroad Park is located south of Pinnacle Peak Road on 43rd Avenue in the City of Glendale, Arizona. In addition, it has several World War II-era Internment Camp Houses, originally intended as temporary housing at the Leupp Isolation Center.

The peak lends its name to a major east-west street in the Phoenix area called Camelback Road [8] that runs about 34 miles (55 km) starting from the eastern border of Scottsdale through the Phoenix metropolitan area to the westside suburb of Litchfield Park. Camelback Mountain is designated as a Phoenix Point of Pride. [9]
