The NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship is the annual tournament held by the NCAA to determine the top men's Division II College soccer program in the United States. It has been played annually since 1972; prior to that, all teams competed in a single class.
[1] [2] From 1959 through 1971, the NCAA had only one division for soccer; the Division II tournament was started in 1972, [3] and the Division III tourney followed in 1974. First, when the NCAA placed severe restrictions on the fielding of Division I teams by Division II institutions in 2011, it grandfathered in all then-current D-I teams at D-II schools. Apart from this, Division II members are allowed to compete for Division I championships in sports in which a Division II national championship is not contested.
