VFA-14 and VFA-41, who had been part of CVW-8, had transitioned to the F/A-18 Super Hornet and were attached to CVW-11, and VFA-22 was sent to CVW-9. CVW-11 made its first deployment with Nimitz in March 2003 supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom , as only the second air wing to deploy Super Hornets.

On 3 March 2006 a single EA-6B Prowler aircraft from VAQ-135 with a crew of four was conducting low altitude flight training near Walla Walla Washington and crash landed north of Pendleton, Oregon.

In October 1980, the squadron transferred to CVW-11 (NH) aboard USS America. Following a 1981 Indian Ocean deployment which saw the squadron and USS America make their only visit to Perth/Fremantle, Western Australia from 25–31 August 1981, VAW-123 transferred to CVW-1 (AB) on 12 November 1981.
