The school was formed as a result of the merger in 1968 of two schools - an all-girls secondary modern school on the current site, and a boys central school which was located on Graham Road. The current site has been in use since before World War II and is set in a residential area.
Jones attended Pelham Road Infants and Primary Schools in Bexleyheath and after passing the 11-plus, Jones was educated at Colfe's School (Exhibitioner). Winning a Leathersellers' Scholarship and a Barclay's Bank Scholarship he then went up to New College, Oxford , where he read jurisprudence (graduating MA ).

Bexleyheath has leisure facilities including the Edward Alderton Theatre, Cineworld cinema, hotel, the Central Library, Bexley Local Studies and Archive Centre, five-a-side football centre, bingo hall and ten-pin bowling alley (Ten Pin). Bexleyheath and Belvedere Hockey Club are based in Welling, but play some home matches at Erith School. [12]
Initially, Erith School was a ten-form entry school catering for students of all abilities. In 1972, it became a bilateral school, the only one in the London Borough of Bexley. Between 1967 and 1997, the school was situated on two sites. The East Building, on Avenue Road, was the old Erith Grammar School, with buildings dating from the 1950s.
