"My Old Man" is a short story written by Ernest Hemingway, published in his 1923 book Three Stories and Ten Poems, which published by a small Paris imprint. [1] The story was also included in his next collection of stories, In Our Time , published in New York in 1925 by Boni & Liveright .
Among the short stories, the book includes Hemingway's previous volumes and added his latest published works "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber", "The Snows of Kilimanjaro", "The Capital of the World" and "Old Man at the Bridge" as well as his very first writing, "Up in Michigan". The collection is split in two parts. Part One contains the four individual collections of stories Hemingway published during his lifetime. They are the tiny experimental prose volume, in our time (1924), the much expanded In Our Time (1925, with an extra story added in 1930), Men Without Women (1927) and Winner Take Nothing (1933).
The story even includes a pun about a sparrow, which served as a euphemism for female genitals. The story, which predates the Grimms' by nearly two centuries, actually uses the phrase "the sauce of Love." The Grimms didn't just shy away from the feminine details of sex, their telling of the stories repeatedly highlight violent acts against women.
The book's title story, "First Person Singular", is a new story that was previously unpublished. The other seven stories in the book were first published in the literary magazine Bungakukai between summer 2018 and winter 2020. Several stories in the book were also previously published in English in The New Yorker and Granta. [26]
