The Leaning Pine Arboretum is located on 5 acres (20,000 m 2) on the north side of the California Polytechnic State University campus, in San Luis Obispo, central California. The arboretum is maintained by students. [1] In 2022, the Arboretum received a one-million-dollar gift from a former Provost and her husband. [2]
The first idea for the garden began in 1989, and in 1991 the Friends of SLO Botanical Garden was incorporated. In 1993, a 40-year renewable lease for 150 acres (61 ha) was signed with San Luis Obispo County. The 2-acre (8,100 m 2) Preview Garden was opened in 1997. The master plan was completed in 1998, as was the greenhouse and nursery.

SR 227 was adopted as a state route in 1933 as Legislative Route 147. It was an unsigned highway running from LRN 2 near Arroyo Grande to LRN 2 near San Luis Obispo (LRN 2 is currently known as US 101). In 1964 during the renumber of California state routes, LRN 147 became SR 227, and became a signed route.
