Bay Furnace, Michigan. Coordinates: 46°26′30.4″N 86°42′20.1″W. Bay Furnace was a town in Alger County, Michigan west of Munising, Michigan. It was established in 1869 around a blast furnace run by the Bay Furnace Company and used to make iron ore into pig iron. [1]
The furnace was constructed in 1869-70, and by 1874 was producing 15 tons of pig iron daily. A surrounding town, Onota, sprang up, and was soon home to 500 people. A disastrous fire in 1879 destroyed both the furnace and town; neither were rebuilt. The remains of the furnace were partially reconstructed later, and the site is now a campground. 4
