The short-tailed chinchilla has a body size measuring between 23–38 cm long and weighing around 400-800g. Before maturity, short-tailed chinchillas weigh anywhere between 113-170g. [8] Short-tailed chinchillas which have been bred to be pets are typically larger, measuring almost twice the size of those in the wild.
They have large eyes, medium-sized ears, soft dense fur and short bushy tails. The forelegs are shorter than the hind legs. The forefeet have four toes while the hind feet have four small-clawed toes in Lagidium and Chinchilla but three large-clawed toes in Lagostomus , a digging species.

Actually only about half of the wild chinchillas are located within the reserve boundaries. The other half live on private and communally owned lands.
