The practicum should be at least 300 clock-hours with at least 100 clock-hours of direct client contact. Academic credit for the practicum must appear on the applicant's transcript. After completion of the graduate degree and before application, an applicant must take and pass the National Counselor Exam and the Texas Jurisprudence Exam.
Counselor training tends to occur in formal classes and training programs. Part of counselor training may involve counseling clients under the supervision of a licensed clinician. Supervision can also occur between licensed clinicians, as a way to improve clinicians' quality of work and competence with various types of counseling clients.
Almost all information that a client reveals during counseling is protected, unless the client intends to cause harm to themselves or others. The client's consent is almost always required for the reveal of information to a third party. Laws of privileged communication within applicable states also further protect the privacy of clients.
