The Royal Veterinary College is the oldest and largest veterinary school in the United Kingdom. Founded in 1791 , it became part of the University of London in 1949 , although it remains largely self-governed.
All veterinary nurses must be registered with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). Registered Veterinary Nurses have dispensations in law (the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966, amended in 2002) to undertake certain procedures to include minor surgery and anaesthesia on animals under veterinary direction. Ernest Cotchin (23 August 1917 – 27 September 1988) was Professor of Veterinary Pathology at the Royal Veterinary College between 1963 and 1982. [1] [2] He was Vice-Principal of the Royal Veterinary College from 1974 until 1988, and a world expert on neoplasia in domestic mammals.
The Veterinary Medical College Application Service (VMCAS) is a centralized application service for students applying to veterinary school. [1] Created by the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) in 1995, VMCAS handles applications for most of the veterinary schools in the United States, as well as several in Canada, the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Australia.
The two schools existed amicably within 100 m of one another in Edinburgh's New Town until 1904, when the Williams' school moved to Liverpool, England, forming the basis of the University of Liverpool Faculty of Veterinary Science. The Royal (Dick) Veterinary College was incorporated by Act of Parliament in 1906. [citation needed]
