A new company, H&R 1871, Inc., was formed in 1991 and started production of revolvers, single-shot rifles and shotguns using original H&R designs. H&R 1871, Inc. assets were subsequently sold to H&R 1871, LLC., a Connecticut LLC owned by Marlin Firearms Company in November 2000.

It appears that around 1874 the company was discontinued. The business was reorganized in 1880 in Worcester, Massachusetts making "Bay State Gun" branded firearms. In 1909 the company was purchased by Hopkins & Allen Arms Company of Norwich, Connecticut which continued to use the "Bay State" brand name on single-barrel shotguns.

The .45-70 (11.6x53mmR), also known as the .45-70 Government, .45-70 Springfield, and .45-2 1 ⁄ 10" Sharps, is a .45 caliber rifle cartridge originally holding 70 grains of black powder that was developed at the U.S. Army's Springfield Armory for use in the Springfield Model 1873.

Any rifle frame may accept rifle or shotgun barrels. The shotgun frames, however, are only safe for shotgun barrels. These were originally built by Harrington & Richardson starting in 1871.
