The northern panhandle is one of the two panhandles in the U.S. state of West Virginia.It is a culturally and geographically distinct region of the state. It is the state's northernmost extension, bounded by Ohio and the Ohio River on the north and west and the state of Pennsylvania on the east.

Brooke County is a county in the Northern Panhandle of the U.S. state of West Virginia.As of the 2020 census, the population was 22,559. [1] Its county seat is Wellsburg. [2] The county was created in 1797 from part of Ohio County [3] and named in honor of Robert Brooke, Governor of Virginia from 1794 to 1796. [4]
The first evidence of humans in West Virginia dates back to the nomadic Paleo-Indians in 11,000 BCE. [1] From 7000 to 1000 BCE, archaic Native American cultures developed in the Northern Panhandle, the Eastern Panhandle, and the Kanawha River Valley. [1]
