Ucea de Jos is crossed by the DN1 road; Făgăraș is 25.7 km (16.0 mi) to the east while Sibiu is 52.7 km (32.7 mi) to the west. The Ucea railway station serves the CFR Main Line 200, which runs from Brașov to the Hungarian border at Curtici. The Ucea–Victoria railway line branches off towards the city of Victoria, 9 km (5.6 mi) to the south.
The merger was supported by 79.2% of AUT and 95.7% of NATFHE members who voted. The two unions amalgamated on 1 June 2006, and after a transitional year, full operational unity was achieved in June 2007. The new union is called the University and College Union (UCU).
