Students examine the biological and ecological processes that have developed and maintain the biodiversity of the tropical terrestrial biota. Students discuss issues of conservation, sustainable development and resource use, and the human impact on these fragile ecosystems. This course involves extensive field work and completion of field projects.
La Selva Biological Station is a protected area encompassing 1,536 ha of low-land tropical rain forest in northeastern Costa Rica. It is owned and operated by the Organization for Tropical Studies , [ 2 ] a consortium of universities and research institutions from the United States, Costa Rica, and Puerto Rico. [ 3 ]

The Cerro de la Muerte Biological Station is one of the several field stations for biological research that exist in Costa Rica.. Located at 3,200 m elevation (approximately 10,500 feet) on the southeastern slope of the Cerro Bellavista (one of the highest points in the Cordillera de Talamanca), this is the biological station located at the highest elevation in Costa Rica and perhaps [citation ...
The Maderas Rainforest Conservancy grew out of two field school locations offering classes in rainforest ecology, primatology, art workshops, and other classes relevant to the area: Ometepe, Nicaragua and La Suerte, Costa Rica. Rampant deforestation of these areas prompted the creation of a nonprofit organization geared to protecting and ...
The Biological Station is adjacent to a palm-filled canal (Spanish translation, caño palma) that separates the station from the Caribbean Sea by a mere 200–300 metres. Once an ancient floodplain , this Atlantic tropical wet forest covers the lowlands and is one of Costa Rica's richest biological ecosystems . [ 6 ]
An all-taxa biodiversity inventory, or ATBI, is an attempt to document and identify all biological species living in some defined area, usually a park, reserve, or research area. The term was coined in 1993, in connection with an effort initiated by ecologist Daniel Janzen to document the diversity of the Guanacaste National Park in Costa Rica. [1]
Biological stations (also known as biological field stations) are research stations specializing in biology and ecology. Their size and purpose varies, [1] mainly regarding research, conservation and education. [2] They are located in all biomes, including aquatic ones. Students, other scientists and the public are the aim public of these sites.
