Aston Villa Football Club were formed in 1874, by fifteen members [Report by the Sports Argus on a talk by co-founder Jack Hughes, 1899] of the Wesleyan Chapel at Villa Cross (known as early as 1867 as Aston Villa Wesleyan Chapel) [1] [2] in Lozells. Four of the founders were Jack Hughes, Frederick Matthews, Walter Price and William Scattergood.
In the case of Aston Villa Football Club, while the rampant lion was associated with the club from near its inception in 1874, the earliest known crest, the Lion Rampant To dexter (facing left) on a shield with motto "Prepared", was first documented in the club program of 1st September 1906. [1]

The new crest included a star to represent the European Cup win in 1982, and has a light blue background behind Villa's "lion rampant." The traditional motto "Prepared" remained in the crest, and the name "Aston Villa" was shortened to AVFC, FC having been omitted from the previous crest.
Although Villa finished seventh in 1961–62, the following season saw the beginning of a decline in form that would see them finish in 15th place in 1963 and fourth from the bottom in 1964. Manager Joe Mercer parted company with the club in July 1964 because of these results and his declining health. [ 1 ]
