Development of Namibia's army was the fastest of the three arms of service. The first units of the Army were deployed as early as 1990. The Army was formed when the two former enemies South West African Territorial Force and the People's Liberation Army of Namibia were inducted after Namibia's independence into the newly created Namibian Defence Force.
The Chief of Defence Force is a singular appointment that comes with an elevation to the rank of lieutenant general for an Army officer, air marshal for an Air Force officer and vice admiral for a Navy officer. Windhoeker Maschinenfabrik (WMF) is a Namibian defense contractor located in Windhoek, Namibia. It is operated as a subsidiary of the Namibian Defence Force (NDF). WMF designs and manufactures monocoque V-hull armoured combat vehicles. WMF is responsible for the armoured bodywork fabrication while engines, transmissions and axles are built by MAN.
The NDF owns August 26 Group, a holding company for a number of commercial entities related to the military, among them Namibia's only arms manufacturer Windhoeker Maschinenfabrik. [ 2 ] The political leader of MODVA is the minister while the accounting officer is the executive director (ED), deputised by a deputy executive director.
The Namibian Air Force is the aerial warfare branch of the Namibian Defence Force.It was commissioned on 13 March 2005 at Grootfontein Air Force Base. [2] Following the independence of Namibia from South Africa in 1990, the Air Defence Wing of the Namibian Defence Force was established on 23 July 1994. [2]
