Like all XML-based formats, MusicXML is intended to be easy for automated tools to parse and manipulate. Though it is possible to create MusicXML by hand, interactive score writing programs like Finale and MuseScore greatly simplify the reading, writing, and modifying of MusicXML files.
During the 1990s, many of these early programs, such as the Mosaic notation program, fell into disuse, as newer programs surpassed them in ease of use and output quality. Finale and Sibelius were released, with high-quality output and a wide range of sophisticated features that made them suitable for almost all kinds of music applications.

Encore is a music notation (scorewriter) program for Microsoft Windows and macOS. MusicTime Deluxe is a 'reduced functionality' version of Encore. Encore is meant to play back music – either imported as MIDI, recorded from a MIDI device, or entered with mouse and keyboard.
