Use Gmail, then use first.m.last.mil@usa.army.mil. Are you still trying to access the old @mail.mil because that is blown out and gone. SPC and below were given army google workspace accounts so you need to go mail.google.com and login with username@usa.army.mil and then use your cac certificates to complete login.
As others have said you'll just go to https://web.mail.mil and select the PIV AUTHENTICATION certificate from your CAC (not the one labeled email). Locked out of military email/Outlook. So I just attempted to sign into my military email via outlook. It stated: “Your account has been locked. Contact your support person to unlock it.”. But every time I try to contact support Microsoft wants me to sign in which I can’t. And I cannot get in contact with anybody from Microsoft.
Each branch can be very different and saying "the military" isn't helpful. Include your country if you're not asking about the US military. Otherwise we'll assume you're American. The attached document on Army Operational Knowledge Management (Managing E-mail) states that you should "Include a signature block on all messages that contains your phone number and email address. This allows people to respond to you even if they only have the last piece of an email thread available."

I routinely access my mail.mil account from offsite locations, home, hotels while traveling, etc. Biggest culprits from your errors - outdated DOD certificates installed on your machine, and choosing the wrong certificate. For some reason, I can only access my e-mail if I choose the NOT e-mail certificate.
You'll get a real DISA account eventually, along with the rest of the accesses you'll use in your career. Finally, to be clear, the email address scheme has moved away from service or other status specific domains. It's usually just generic @mail.mil now, so it's not like this account will eventually get migrated anyways.
