On top of collapsed trachea he's got some congestive heart failure which makes him cough more so he takes spironolactone (diuretic) to make him pee out some of that extra fluid from his lungs. If your vet recommends this make sure you take your pup out to pee more often! He's also prescribed an inhaler 2 puffs twice a day (bronchodilator and ...
blackd0gz. • 3 yr. ago • Edited 3 yr. ago. My dog is almost 16 and he also has a collapsed trachea. I took him off the theophylline. It made him worse. The only thing that’s helping him is the Hydrocodone. I regularly give him about .25-.3ml every 7-8/hrs. Sometimes 0.05-.1ml more within 4 hours if the coughing comes back.
I think that's more indicative of what you'll see with a collapsed trachea. You can also usually elicit a cough on dogs with collapsed trachea by putting gentle pressure on their neck (think adam's apple region). If you push down gently on this area and the dog coughs, he might have collapsed trachea. 6.

My chi mix has severe collapsing trachea, and honking is the classic symptom. Having an episode after drinking water is extremely common, as is vomiting (particularly saliva). If you can take a video of it, it will really help the vet. You absolutely do need to take her to the vet.
Dogs with tracheal collapse slowly lose their ability to release heat. Exposing them to heat= panting= strain and further weakening of the trachea. Towards the end of her life, my own body heat was even causing my dog to pant after only sitting next to me for 10 mins.
First, DO NOT use a collar. Only use a step-in harness, no part of which touches the neck. Second, maintain a healthy weight. More weight will worsen the condition. My vet advises against the surgery unless it is really severe and unresponsive to meds. For our current dog, just using the step in harness has alleviated most issues related to the ...
First, keeping them on the skinny side is really important. This is really hard with my dog but we work at it. Whatever you have to do in terms of food and amounts to keep weight off is really important. Next, I noticed that she has a harder time in dry air and cold air.

Help! I'm looking for any advice for my current situation. Our 10 year old family dog, Ozzy (Cairn Terrier Jack Russell Mix), has been dealing with a collapsed trachea and enlarged heart for a little over a year now. That's roughly when the coughing started. I've watched it slowly progress into something that truly breaks my heart to see/hear.
