In a side plot, Tora Ziyal, the half-Bajoran daughter of the former Cardassian prefect of Bajor, Gul Dukat, attempts to befriend the exiled Cardassian spy-turned-tailor Elim Garak. Garak fears that Ziyal has been instructed to kill him, since Garak was responsible for the torture and death of Dukat's father years ago.
Tora Ziyal is the half Cardassian / half Bajoran daughter of Dukat and his mistress Tora Naprem. She was played by Cyia Batten in " Indiscretion " and " Return to Grace ," by Tracy Middendorf in the episode " For the Cause ," and by Melanie Smith , over six episodes from season 5's " In Purgatory's Shadow " to season 6's " Sacrifice of Angels ."
Garak's secrecy keeps him a character of interest and importance; he later uses his contacts with Cardassia and his training in the Obsidian Order to assist the Federation in the war against the Dominion. Garak appears in 37 of the 176 episodes of Deep Space Nine, including the series finale, and appears in each of the seven seasons.
A Stitch in Time was written by Andrew Robinson, who portrayed Garak on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Garak shoots him and allows Lang, Hogue, and Rekelen to escape. Lang convinces Quark to let her leave, promising to return to him when her work reforming the Cardassian government is done. Quark sadly lets her go. Once she leaves, Quark asks why Garak shot Toran, and Garak asks why Quark let Lang go. "I had no choice — I love her," Quark says.
