Naval Air Station Lee Field was a United States Navy air base that opened on September 11, 1940, in Green Cove Springs, Florida to support the World War II efforts. The Air Station was on the St. Johns River in Clay County, Florida. The Air Station and Navy base was on 1,560 acres.
Although many of the stations have been located on shore, floating stations have been based on the Ohio River [1] and Dorchester Bay. [2] Many of the stations listed date from the 1800s, during the existence of the United States Life-Saving Service. Development of stations were started with the 1848 signing of the Newell Act.
Today the consolidated Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Training Facility supports the Department of Defense Joint Service EOD training mission. This military construction project centralizes all basic EOD training at Eglin AFB, Florida. The consolidation saves the DoD $4.3 million in annual recurring costs.
